Sir Simon Wessely is Professor of Psychological Medicine, King’s College London and the President of Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at King’s College and the Maudsley Hospitals.
His doctorate is in epidemiology, and he has over 700 original publications, with an emphasis on the boundaries of medicine and psychiatry, unexplained symptoms and syndromes, population reactions to adversity, military health, epidemiology and others.
He has co-authored books on chronic fatigue syndrome, randomised controlled trials and a history of military psychiatry.
Gary Rodin, MD, FRCPC
Gary Rodin is a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Global Institute of Psychosocial, Palliative and End-of-Life Care (GIPPEC) at the University of Toronto. He is also Head of the Department of Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
Dr. Rodin is an internationally recognized clinician-investigator who has published two books and more than 250 peer-reviewed publications on the psychiatric and psychosocial aspects of cancer and other medical illnesses.
He is currently leading funded research on the psychological impact of life-threating illness in patients and their families and the impact of tailored psychotherapeutic interventions in this population
Ullakarin Nyberg, MD, PhD
Ullakarin Nyberg is a senior consultant psychiatrist and lecturer at Northern Stockholm psychiatry, St Goran´s hospital. There, she works as a liaison psychiatrist in oncology. She is also enganged with suicide prevention on a national basis.
Her research at the Karolinska Institute focuses on the consequences of bereavement due to suicide and professional interventions that can prevent loss-associated health deterioration.
Ullakarin is the scientific secretary of the Swedish Psychiatric Association. Her recently published book “The art of saving lives – how to prevent suicide” is frequently used by professionals that encounter suicidal persons.
Carmine Pariante, MD, PhD, FRCPsych
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
Carmine Pariante is Professor of Biological Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, and Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist in the associated South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. He investigates the role of stress in the pathogenesis of mental disorders and in the response to psychotropic drugs, both in clinical samples and experimental settings.
His work focuses on depression and fatigue, with a particular interest in the perinatal period and in subjects with medical disorders. Moreover, he also uses animal and cellular models.
Professor Pariante has received numerous awards for his research: for example, from the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education (APIRE), and the British Association for Psychopharmacology.
He has recently been awarded the 2012 “Academic Psychiatrist of the Year” Award from the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the 2015 Anna-Monika Prize for Research on Depression. His dream is that new therapeutic tools targeting the stress system will soon be available to alleviate the suffering of patients with mental health problems.
Jim van Os, MD, PhD, MRCPsych
Jim van Os is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands, and Visiting Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK.
He trained in Psychiatry in Casablanca (Morocco), Bordeaux (France) and finally at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley/Bethlem Royal Hospital in London (UK) and after his clinical training was awarded a three-year UK Medical Research Council Training Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
In 1995, he moved to Maastricht University Medical Centre. He is elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and appears on the 2014 Thomson-Reuter Web of Science list of the world’s ‘most influential scientific minds’ of our time.
Colin M. Shapiro, PhD, MBBCh, FRCP(C), MRC (Psych)
Colin Shapiro is a professor of Psychiatry and Opthalmology at the University of Toronto.He is director of the Sleep & Alertness Clinic, the Sleep Research Laboratory at the Toronto Western Hospital (TWH). He directs the only independent children’s sleep clinic at Youthdale and the International Sleep Clinic in Parry Sound.
He was the director of the Neuropsychiatry program at the TWH where he maintains a clinical, research and teaching role. He was the editor of the Journal of Psychosomatic Research for 17 years and sits on several journal boards.
He has authored more than 250 research papers, over 250 other publications and numerous books (including one children’s book). He is particularly pleased with his growing collection of “Sleep” and “Dream” poetry (in many languages) on his website www.sleepontario.com
He was the founding president of the British Sleep Society and elected president of the International Neuropsychiatric Association in 1998. He is a member of a number of Sleep Societies and is a past president of Sleep/Wake Disorders Canada- a self help organization.
Michael Sharpe, MA, MD, MB, FRCP, FRCP(Edin), FRCPsych

Michael Sharpe is Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Oxford UK and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.
His main clinical research interest is the interface between psychiatry and other areas of medicine. He has worked in the area of chronic fatigue for more than 25 years, published the first positive trial of cognitive behaviour therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome in 1996, and was a principal investigator of the PACE trial of treatments for chronic fatigue in 2011.
He also leads research a programme of research into the management of depressive co-morbidity in the medically ill, particularly cancer.
Professor Sharpe is a member of Council and Chair of the Research Committee of the American Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
Torbjørn Elvsåshagen, MD, PhD
Dr. Torbjørn Elvsåshagen is a postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT) at the Oslo University Hospital.
Dr. Elvsåshagen completed medical training at the University of Oslo and gained a PhD in biological psychiatry from University of Oslo. He is currently in a neurology residency program at the Department of Neurology at the Oslo University Hospital.
Dr. Elvsåshagen’s main research interests are the role of synaptic plasticity and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in psychiatric disorders and the effects of sleep deprivation on brain plasticity.
Rikard Wicksell, PhD

Rikard Wicksell is a psychologist and an internationally renowned researcher in the field of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and chronic pain.
He is head of the Behaviour Medicine Pain Treatment Service at the Centre for Pain Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital.
He has authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters on ACT and pain. His book “To live with pain – ACT as a strategy for life” was published in Swedish in 2014.
Robert Maunder, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Robert Maunder is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Head of Research for the Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Psychiatry in Toronto, Canada. His clinical work concerns psychiatric aspects of living with inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis C and other chronic illnesses.
Dr. Maunder’s research and writing has focussed on stress, resilience and the interpersonal determinants of health. He was the lead researcher and author on a series of papers documenting the impact of childhood adversity and of extraordinary workplace stress, from SARS to critical incidents, on healthcare workers.
With Jon Hunter, Dr. Maunder developed an influential model of the paths by which insecure attachment contributes to adult disease and illness, co-authored the upcoming book, Love, Fear & Health: How Our Attachments to Others Shape Health and Health Care (University of Toronto Press) and co-edited the upcoming Improving Patient Treatment with Attachment Theory: A Guide for Primary Care Practitioners and Specialists (Springer).
With Paula Ravitz, he co-edited a series of six multi-media textbooks, Psychotherapy Essentials To Go (Norton), which bring evidence-supported techniques of psychotherapy to front-line mental health workers. Drs. Maunder and Hunter are also the developers of a series of Youtube videos bringing the principles of attachment and its impact on health to a broad audience, and the curators of a Twitter feed on the topic (@boiby).
David Taylor, BSc, MSc, PhD, MICR, FCMHP, FFRPS, FRPharmS
David Taylor is Director of Pharmacy and Pathology at the Maudsley Hospital, Professor of Psychopharmacology at King’s College, London and Honorary Professor at the Institute of Psychiatry.
David is also the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology and Head of Pharmaceutical Sciences in King’s Health Partners. He has previously been President of the College of Mental Health Pharmacists and Chairman of the UK Psychiatric Pharmacy Group.
In 2014, David was ranked in the top 100 clinical leaders in the NHS by the Health Service Journal Professor Taylor has been the lead author of the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines since their inception in 1993. The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines have sold over 200,000 copies in twelve editions and been translated into ten languages.
David has also authored around 225 clinical papers in journals such as the BMJ, British Journal of Psychiatry and Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. These papers have been cited over 5000 times. Professor Taylor has an H Index of 43.
Per Fink, MD
Per Fink is an MD from Aarhus University, Denmark and a specialist in psychiatry. He has authorization in dynamic psychotherapy and cognitive psychotherapy and basic training in group therapy and ACT therapy.
He is PhD (Psychiatric and somatic comorbidity, 1993) and DMSc (Persistent somatization, 1997).
In 1999, he started and also became director of the Research Clinic for Functional Disorders at Aarhus University Hospital; a clinic with an interdisciplinary approach to functional disorders. The clinic first and foremost focuses on research in functional symptoms or medically unexplained symptoms, but also on developing treatment programs for patients with these symptoms.
In 2000, he became associate professor, and in 2009 Professor of functional disorders.
He has intensive experience in teaching at all levels, is member of several editorial boards, and has published around 150 papers, books and book chapters.
Lene Hardt Sanchez Toscano, MD
Lene Hardt Sanchez Toscano is a specialist in general medicine and consultant at the Department for Functional Disorders and the Pain and Headache Clinic at Aarhus University Hospital. She also holds a diploma in journalism.
Lene has a broad clinical background including experience in occupationa and environmental medicine as well as clinical immunology.
During the last five years, Lene has been responsible for public relations and liaison with the press and other media at the Research Clinic for Functional Disorders at Aarhus University.
She had broad experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching for doctors and other professions allied to medicine.
Albert F.G. Leentjes, MD, PhD

Associate Professor Dr. Albert F.G. Leentjens is working is a consultant neuropsychiatrist and senior lecturer in neuropsychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology of Maastricht University Hospital, and the Institute of Brain and Behaviour of Maastricht University, Maastricht the Netherlands.
He studied Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 2002 he completed his Ph.D. thesis on the role of serotonin in depression in patients with Parkinson’s disease. He has done research in the field of the psychopathology of movement disorders ever since, with a focus on mood, motivation and cognition.
He was principal investigator to a number of national and international multi-site studies, and published more than 100 papers and book chapters in international peer-reviewed journals. From 2011 to 2013 he served on the Scientific Affairs Committee of the Movement Disorder Society.
He is past president of the Section of General Hospital Psychiatry of the Dutch Psychiatric Association and of the European Association of Psychosomatic Medicine (www. eapm.eu.org formerly EACLPP).
He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine.
James Strain, MD

Dr. James J. Strain is Professor of Psychiatry, Professor of Medical Education, and Master Teacher at the Icahn Medical School at Mount Sinai in New York City. He was former Director of Behavioral Medicine and Consultation Psychiatry at the Medical School and Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Strain’s principle interests have been the Psychological Care of the Medically Ill, Innovations in Consultation – Liaison Psychiatry Models, the development of an Electronic Health Record, and Bioethics.
He has over 500 publications, 6 books, and has given 781 national and international lectures while traveling in all the countries of the world except two: Guinea and Iraq. Dr. Strain has trained more than 140 fellows in consultation-liaison-psychosomatic psychiatry and mentored international fellows from several countries.
His computerized C-L clinical record encouraged the important first European Study of psychiatric consultations from multiple countries and multiple consultants organized and led by Dr. Frits Huyse at the Free University, Amsterdam, Netherlands and funded by the European Community.
Gladys Witt-Strain, PhD, RD, FTOS
Dr. Strain is nationally and internationally recognized for her research on the endocrinology of obesity, the problems of weight loss maintenance, and treatment of morbid obesity with the current emphasis on the effects of bariatric surgery.
Her recent publications concern comparisons of body composition changes after the 4 surgical procedures that are completed to assist with weight loss, quality of life issues and depression comparing the four surgeries and the cognitive effects of bariatric surgery. She has given over 100 national and international presentations, published 105 papers and 8 book chapters.
Currently she is involved with the analysis of the data collection of the NIH supported Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (LABS) which involved 10 surgical sites over a ten year period, and serves as Director of Research for G.I.Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Weill Cornell College of Medicine.
Kristina Orth-Gomér, MD, PhD
Kristina Orth-Gomér is specialist in internal medicine and professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
Her research has focused on the role on psychosocial and standard risk factors in the aetiology of cardiovascular disease. Her pioneering work, including landmark studies such as the The Stockholm Female Coronary Angiography Study and the Stockholm Women Intervention Trial for Coronary Heart Disease, funded by the Swedish Research Council, the Bank of Sweden, Soc med FR, AFA among others, demonstrated the impact of psychological and environmental factors on the risk and prognosis of myocardial infarction, and have led to several PhDs.
She has edited and published several books including “Women, Stress and Heart Disease” at Erlbaum Assoc. New Jersey (Orth-Gomer, Chesney, Wenger. Her latest title:”Psychosocial stress and Cardiovascular Disease in women… Concepts, Findings and Futures Directions” (Orth-Gomer, Schneiderman, Vccarino, Deter) has appeared in spring 2015.
Sarah Wamala, MSc, PhD
Dr. Sarah Wamala is an independent international advisor and has recently served as the professor of health policy and leadership at Karolinska Institutet and as Director-General of the Swedish National Institute of Public Health in Sweden.
Sarah has a PhD in Medical Sciences from Karolinska Institutet, a Master’s degree in Biostatistics and Social Sciences from Stockholm University and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Makerere University (Uganda).
Sarah has formal training in leadership development skills which includes the Stanford Executive Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (USA). Sarah has co-edited four books and published several original scientific articles and debate articles. Sarah has supervised several PhD research students to final dissertation.
Elspeth Guthrie, MSc, MD, FRCPsych
Professor Guthrie is a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist and Honorary Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Manchester. She runs a busy, inner city, consultation-liaison service to a large teaching hospital and conducts research into the relationship between physical and psychological health.
Her main areas have included the development of psychological treatments for people with persistent physical symptoms and the role of depression in the overall outcome of patients with long term conditions.
She has written and co-edited several text books in liaison psychiatry and has published widely in the field. She is a former Chair of the Faculty of Liaison Psychiatry, Royal College of Psychiatrists and is an Executive Council member of the EAPM.
May Blom, PhD
Dr May Blom is director of the Department of Clinician Support/Division of Evidence Based Medicine at Stockholm County Council.
There she is responsible for the generation and distribution of clinical guidelines and evidence-based medical information and liaison and networking with relevant medical experts.
Her main research interests are coronary heart disease and psychosocial risk factors such as life style and gender. Her current work focuses on practical ways to improve the prognosis after acute coronary events.

Mikael Sandlund, MD, PhD

Marjolein de Vugt, PhD

Marjolein De Vugt is associate professor at the successful research school Mental Health and Neurosciences at Maastricht University.
She is co-director of the Alzheimer Center Limburg and working as a health care psychologist in the memory clinic of the academic hospital Maastricht.
Her research focuses on psychosocial aspects of cognitive disorders and she is project coordinator of several cohort studies and intervention studies with a special interest in ehealth interventions.
De Vugt is board member of the section Neuropsychology of the Dutch Institute for Psychology. Internationally, she is an active member of the European network on research into early detection and timely intervention in dementia (INTERDEM).
Mille Moeller Thastum, MPsy
Mille Moeller Thastum is a PhD student at the Research Clinic for Functional Disorders and Psychosomatics, Aarhus University Hospital, where she develops and tests a novel early treatment programme for young people (15 – 30 years) with long-lasting post-concussional symptoms.
Prior to this, Mille has for 12 years been working as a clinical neuropsychologist at Hammel Research and Rehabilitation Centre, which is affiliated with Aarhus University, Denmark.
From this position, she has solid experience with neuropsychological assessments of both mild, moderate and severe brain injury and the translation of test results and observations into practical therapeutic interventions.
Her work at Hammel Rehabilitation Centre also involved supervision of interdisciplinary teams and teaching in the field of neuropsychology.
Michael Ott, MD
Michael Ott, MD Michael Ott is consultant at the department of medicine at Norrlands University Hospital in Umeå, Sweden.
He completed medical training at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Lyon and completed his doctoral thesis in physiology at the University of Tübingen, Germany. He specialized in internal medicine and nephrology in Switzerland.
In mental health, his main research interests concern somatic morbidity in patients with bipolar affective disorders and side effects and interactions of psychopharmacological treatments. He also works clinically part-time with quality improvement and patient safety at the psychiatric clinic at Sunderby Hospital Luleå.
Ellinor Bergdahl, MD, PhD
Ellinor Bergdahl is a resident at the Department of Cardiology at Umeå University Hospital.
She completed medical training at the Umeå University where she also completed her doctoral thesis in Geriatric Medicine and Psychiatry .
Anna Beck, MD
Anna Beck is specialist in general medicine in Luleå. She completed her medical training at the Charité University in Berlin, Germany, and at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands. She then went on to specialize in family medicine in Kalix, Northern Sweden.
Apart from her clinical work, Anna chairs the joint primary/secondary care working party of general practitioners and hospital specialists.
She is also director of postgraduate education of general practice for the Luleå/Boden catchment area.
Erika Sigvallius, RMN
Erika is a qualified Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN). She also trained in the subspecialty forensic nursing and is a member of the Swedish Network for Forensic Nursing (Svenskt Nätverk för Forensisk Omvårdnad).
She has long and wide-ranging experience as a psychiatric nurse, having worked in various subspecialties including forensic psychiatry, neuropsychiatry and eating disorders.
At Sunderby Hospital psychiatric department, Erika is responsible for patient safety, critical incident review, as well as formulation and implementation of measures to improve care processes.
Erika is also engaged in teaching. In this capacity, she acts as a trainer for the local suicide prevention programme, directed at doctors, nurses and medical students from Umeå University studying at Sunderby Hospital in Luleå.
Sitaram Velaga, PhD

Sitaram Velaga is professor of pharmacy at the Luleå University of Technology. There he is responsible for the PhD programme at the Institute of Health Sciences.
He gained his PhD at Uppsala University and has postdoc experience from Kuopio University Finland.
His research focuses on the development of innovative solutions and formulations that maximize bioavailability but at the same time minimize adverse effects. His research group has published more than 50 scientific articles and more than 20 conferences. Velaga is a peer reviewer for many well accepted scientific journals.
Marta Novak, MD, PhD
Dr. Marta Novak is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto and University Health Network, Toronto and at the Institute of Behavioral Sciences, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary.
She has a longstanding research and clinical interest in mental health, psychotherapies, quality of life and sleep problems in patients with medical illness, with a focus on patients with chronic kidney disease and patients with sleep disorders.
Ulrik Malt, MD, PhD
Professor Ulrik Fredrik Malt, Department of Research, Division of Surgery and Clinical Neuroscience, Oslo University Hospital and Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo, Norway.
Dr. Malt’s main clinical and research interests are clinical neuropsychiatry and neuropsychobiological basis of mental disorders with emphasis on bipolar spectrum disorders, psychosomatic medicine and clinical psychopharmacology. He was involved in the drafting of ICD-10 (F62.0 Endruing personality change after catastrophic experience).
Dr. Malt has extensive clinical experience in diagnostic assessment of mental disorders presenting with unusual and / or mixed clinical features where ordinary psychiatry have problems reaching a diagnostic conclusion.
He was appointed by the Norwegian public prosecutor (Åklagarmyndigheten) to serve as an expert witness in the Anders Behring Breivik trial where he concluded that ABB most likely was suffering from a neurodevelopmental disorder (Asperger syndrome).
Maria Nordin, PhD
Maria Nordin is an associate professor at the Department of Psychology at Umeå University in Sweden. She was trained at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the same university, and did her post doc at UCLA in Los Angeles.
Her main research interest is in health psychology in general and occupational health psychology in particular. Maria Nordin currently works in research projects on health and productivity effects of changing from a traditional to an activity based office; sleep in persons with functional symptoms, and air pollution and dementia.
Maria Nordin is the Director of Graduate Studies at her department and the coordinator of the Master’s Program of Working Life and Health with focus on behavioral sciences.
In collaboration with the Occupational and Behavioral Medicine at Norrlands universitetssjukhus, she constitutes an expert group on psychosocial work environment with the aim to increase the knowledge of its impact on health in Northern Sweden.
Wolfgang Söllner, MD, PhD
Wolfgang Söllner is professor of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the Paracelsus Medical University and head of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Nuremberg General Hospital.
Dr. Söllner’s main clinical and research interests are psychiatric co-morbidities of medically ill patients, psycho-oncology, chronic pain, and psychotherapy with the medically ill. He has extensive clinical experience in training physicians in communication skills.
Dr. Söllner is the principal author of the European guidelines for training in C-L psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine and one of the editors of Uexküll’s Textbook of Psychosomatic Medicine.
He is a Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. Since 2012, he is president of the European Association of Psychosomatic Medicine (EAPM) and, since 2014, chancellor of the Paracelsus Medical University in Nuremberg.
Ursula Werneke, MD, MSc, FRCPsych
Ursula Werneke is consultant psychiatrist at Sunderby Hospital Luleå and director for postgraduate education in psychiatry for Norrbotten County Council. She is also associate professor (docent) at Umeå University and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK.
Ursula Werneke trained psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London and liaison psychiatry at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, Britain’s premier cancer hospital.
Dr. Werneke’s main interests are lifestyle, nutrition, clinical pharmacology and complementary medicine, and her work in these areas has gained broad international attention.
She is a regular contributor of the CPD Online programme of the Royal College of Psychiatrist and has a book chapter in the New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry. Dr. Werneke is a biographee of Marquis Who’s Who series.
