Dinesh Bhugra, CBE PhD FRCP FRCPE FRCPsych

Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE is the current President of the World Psychiatric Association (until October 2017) and Emeritus Professor of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London. He has authored/co-authored over 400 scientific papers, chapters and 30 books, including Leadership in Psychiatry, Principles of Social Psychiatry, Mental Health of Refugees and Asylum Seekers (highly commended in the 2011 BMA Awards), Migration and Mental Health, Textbook of Cultural Psychiatry (recipient of the 2012 Creative Scholarship Award from the Society for the Study of Psychiatry and Culture), Culture and Mental Health and Management for Psychiatrists. His most recent monograph, Mad Tales from Bollywood: Portrayal of Madness in Conventional Hindi Cinema, was published in 2006. Professor Bhugra is editor of three journals – International Journal of Social Psychiatry, International Review of Psychiatry and International Journal of Culture and Mental Health.

Kamaldeep Bhui, CBE MD (Lon) FRCP(Edin) FRCPsych FRSA PFHEA

Professor Kamaldeep Bhui is Professor of Cultural Psychiatry & Epidemiology at Queen Mary University of London and Head of Department in the Centre for Psychiatry, he is also an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist with the East London Foundation Trust and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. He is Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry as well asInternational Journal of Culture and Mental Health. Professor Bhui is Director at the Cultural Consultation Service at Barts (Culturalconsultation.org). He is the co-founder of Careif (www.careif.org), an international mental health charity that promotes work for young people and their health through culture, sport and arts. In 2017 he was awarded a CBE for services to mental health research.

David Taylor, BSc MSc PhD FCMHP FFRPS FRPharmS

Professor David Taylor is Director of Pharmacy and Pathology at the Maudsley Hospital and Professor of Psychopharmacology at King’s College. In 2014, he was ranked in the top 100 clinical leaders in the NHS by the Health Service Journal. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology and Head of Pharmaceutical Sciences at King’s Health Partners. He has served on five NICE Guideline panels since 2002. Professor Taylor has been the lead author of the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines since their inception in 1993, which sold over 250,000 copies in twelve editions and been translated into twelve languages. He has written or edited six further books and over twenty book chapters. He has also authored over 250 clinical papers. These have been cited over 10000 times, with an H Index of 53.

Julian Stern, BA MB ChB FRCPsych

Julian Stern portraitJulian Stern is currently the Director of Adult and Forensic services at the Tavistock Centre in London, UK, and a Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy. After studying Medicine in Cape Town, South Africa, Julian trained in psychiatry and Adult psychotherapy at the Maudsley Hospital in London.He then worked for 17 years as Head of the Psychological Medicine Unit at St Mark’s Hospital. He is passionate about integrating psychological and medical understanding and practice, as well as making psychotherapeutic treatments available to “difficult to reach” patients and families. Julian has published widely in Psychiatric, Psychotherapy and Gastroenterology journals, teaches internationally and has co-edited 2 textbooks: Core Psychiatry and more recently Functional GI disorders: a biopsychosocial approach.

Antonio Ventriglio, MD PhD

Antonio Ventriglio portraitAntonio Ventriglio is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and  honorary researcher at University of Foggia. He has been Research Fellow in 2009 at McLean Hospital (Harvard University, Massachusetts , USA), member of the Ethics and Review  committee of  World Psychiatric Association (WPA, Triennium 2015-2017) and member of the executive committee of Società Italiana di Psichiatria Sociale (SIPS).  He is Editor for letters  to the International Journal of Social Psychiatry. His fields of interests are social psychiatry, psychopharmacology, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, metabolic issues among psychiatry patients.

Yessica Yakeley, MD MRCP FRCPsych

Jessica Yakely is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Forensic Psychotherapy and Director of the Portman Clinic, and Director of Medical Education, Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. She is also a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytic Society and Editor of the journal Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. She specializes in the psychotherapeutic treatment of people presenting with violent and sexual problems. She has published widely on topics including psychological therapies, medical education, violence, risk assessment, prison health, and antisocial personality disorder. She is Research Lead for the Royal College of Psychiatrists Psychotherapy Faculty and for the British Psychoanalytic Council. She is currently leading the national development and implementation of new services for a multi-site randomised-controlled trial of mentalization-based treatment for antisocial personality disorder as part of the UK Government’s National Personality Disorder Offender Pathways Strategy.

Sofie Bäarnhielm, MD, PhD

Sofie Bäärnhielm is the head of the Transcultural Centre, Stockholm County Council. Her clinical and research interest include mental health care and service-caregiver-patient interaction in multicultural settings and clinical application of the Cultural Formulation Interview. She is also the author of the textbook Transkulturell psykiatri, Natur och Kultur, 2014.

Maria Sundvall, MD

Maria Sundvall portraitMaria Sundvall, is a senior consultant in general adult psychiatry. She works at Transcultural Centre of Stockholm County Council, a knowledge centre, dedicated to transcultural psychiatry, including health needs of refugees and asylum seekers. Prior to her current appointment, she worked as a psychiatrist with a focus on psychosis in the multicultural town of Södertälje for many years. She currently undertakes a PhD with the Karolinska Institute. Her project concerns migrants and mental health, and particularly asylum seekers who have made suicide attempts.

Sitaram Velaga, PhD

Sitaram Velaga is professor of pharmacy at Luleå Technical University. There he is responsible for the PhD programme at the Institute of Health Sciences. He gained his PhD at Uppsala University and has postdoc experience from Kuopio University Finland. His research focuses on the development of innovative solutions and formulations that maximize bioavailability but at the same time minimize adverse effects. His research group has published more than 50 scientific articles and more than 20 conferences. Professor Velaga is a peer reviewer for many well accepted scientific journals.

Anders Berntsson, MD (Facilitator)

Anders Berntsson portraitAnders Berntsson is Head of Operations at PRIMA Adult Psychiatry, Stockholm, and Medical Director at Department of Psychiatry,  Sunderby Hospital, Luleå. He holds a medical degree from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and has a broad clinical experience, covering the full range of psychiatric diseases.

Ursula Werneke, MD MSc FRCPsych (Organizer/ Facilitator)

Ursula Werneke portraitUrsula Werneke is consultant psychiatrist at Sunderby Hospital Luleå and director for postgraduate education in psychiatry for Norrbotten County Council. She is also associate professor (docent) at Umeå University and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, having trained psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London. Dr Werneke’s main interests are lifestyle, nutrition, clinical pharmacology and complementary medicine, and her work in these areas has gained broad international attention.
